Discovering Jocelyn Balu: Music Amidst Democratic Republic of Congo’s Struggles

Jocelyn Balu was eight years old when, on his way home from school,his first song came to him as if by magic, complete with verses and chorus.
The lyrics told of the apocalypse looming over the Democratic Republic of the Congo, his war-torn country. The choir at his church, where he had been a gifted soloist for a couple of years, immediately took up this poignant gospel song. Since then, countless other compositions have emerged. Even today, they come unexpectedly, as if someone were singing in Jocelyn Balu’s ear, and they form the repertoire of his exciting new project, Borumba.
